Micro-Credit has been labelled as a major tool that will boost Ghana’s social and economic development, in spite of severe criticism undermining the financial landscape in the country in these recent times.
The Executive Secretary of the Micro-Credit Association Ghana (MCAG), Mr. Ebenezer Quartey, divulged this during the 9th Annual General Meeting of the Association and the presentation of the 2017 Annual Report held in the Western Region.
Mr. Quartey, emphasized that micro- credit has provided undeniable support and has been the reason behind the existence and survival of most micro, small and medium scale businesses who would hitherto be denied loans due to their inability to provide adequate collateral.
The Executive Secretary, explained, MCAG is working diligently to ensure that there is value for money and its values are not compromised. “We hope to tell a different story in 2019, when we celebrate our 10th anniversary”, he added.
He however, made a passionate appeal to Government, the Ministry of Finance and the Bank of Ghana to consider the possibility of setting up a fund that will enable members to access cheaper source of funds for lending.
“We also request for a reduction in recapitalization for the tier 3 Operators and extension of the 31st December 2018 deadline. I call for a national dialogue on the future of microfinance owing to recent development in the sector which will give strong policy direction for the sector”
